Train Strikes: Delay Repay and Refund Rules

What you can claim when rail strikes cancel or delay your train, plus refunds for unused tickets.

Strikes are not an excuse for operators to avoid Delay Repay. Unlike airline rules, UK rail compensation applies regardless of the cause of the delay.

If you travelled and were delayed

Claim Delay Repay as normal. Your delay is measured against the timetable that was valid when you bought your ticket — if an emergency timetable was published before you booked, delays are measured against that.

If you chose not to travel

If your train is cancelled or significantly disrupted by strike action, you can usually get a full fee-free refund on an unused ticket from the retailer you bought it from.

Season ticket holders

During prolonged strikes, some operators offer extra compensation for days you could not travel. Check the operator's announcements and claim within their stated window.

Ticket acceptance

On strike days your ticket may be accepted on other operators or routes. Check National Rail Enquiries before you travel.
