Missed the Last Train? Taxi and Hotel Costs Explained

Your rights when a delay strands you: taxis, hotels and how to claim reasonable costs from the operator.

If a delay or cancellation means you cannot complete your journey that day, the National Rail Conditions of Travel say the operator will, where it can, arrange alternative transport or overnight accommodation.

What to do on the night

  1. Speak to station staff or the train manager first and ask them to arrange a taxi or hotel.
  2. If nobody is available, take a photo of the empty station or departure board.
  3. Choose a reasonable option — a standard taxi or budget hotel — and keep every receipt.

Claiming costs back

Delay Repay covers your fare. Extra costs such as taxis and hotels are claimed separately through the operator's customer relations team, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Send receipts, ticket details and a short explanation.

Consequential losses

Operators rarely pay for missed events or lost earnings, but you can ask. If refused, you may escalate to the Rail Ombudsman.
